3 Routes to Choquequirao

With indescribable landscapes, variation in vegetation and animals that embellish the place, the great Choquequirao Archaeological Complex awaits you. All these attractions you can know with the route that you will choose from the three proposals that have as starting point the city of Cusco;

Going to Choquequirao by Cachora

This is the route most used by tourists, it is done in 4 or 5 days for those who want more time to appreciate all the scenery that you will have at your disposal. The adventure begins when you take a vehicle that will take you from Cusco to Abancay, where you will need another transport to Cachora and then you will arrive at the viewpoint of Capuliyoc, the main starting point for the hike downhill to Chiquisca, the place of the night camp.

The next day you take the road back to Rosalinas beach, from where you climb for hours to reach the community of Marampata, a place that is close to the Choquequirao archeological center. That same day you can enjoy this wonder, but if you have already arrived late, it is better to wait until the next day to visit the whole complex. After that you will follow the same route to return to the city of Cusco. 

Going to Choquequirao through Huanipaca

It is one of the routes with the shortest visit time, it lasts three days, but you will need good physical endurance. To follow this line, you will take a bus from Cusco that goes to Abancay, and then go to the town of Huanipaca, from this place begins the walk downhill towards Playa San Ignacio, which is located on the banks of the Apurimac River, where you will spend the night;

The next day, the hike will be more complicated because of the level of physical demand that you will need, the route is steep and narrow to get close to the Inca citadel and spend the night there. On the third day, you will visit the archaeological center of Choquequiraoand to finish you will make the same way back to Cusco.

Going to Choquequirao via Santa Teresa (Yanama)

You leave Cusco to Santa Teresa (Quillabamba), then you take a vehicle to Yanama, from there you walk uphill through the mountain of San Juan and then down to the caserío Maizal, where you will spend the night and you will have in front of you the  view of the citadel of Choquequirao, which the next morning you can visit with more tranquility and finally return by the same road by which you arrived, this route lasts about four days. 

Recommendations for the hike to Choquequirao along the 3 routes

In any of the routes it is very important to have a good physical condition, with the best vibes to know new tourist experiences and take into account the recommendations that you will need in this adventure:

  • Since these are long hikes, it is essential to carry hydrating food, water bottles and water purification tablets.
  • It is recommended to make the trekking with a travel agency to have greater ease in the journey;
  • Sleeping bag and trekking poles.
  • Clothing and shoes suitable for trekking.
  • Personal hygiene accessories.
  • A small emergency kit.
  • Hat, sun block and mosquito repellent.
  • Use of flashlights and having more than one battery.
